Missing Teeth
Let’s examine what happens when a tooth is lost, and how dentists can repair the damage.
Common Causes of Tooth Loss
Usually, poor oral health or an impact-specific accident is the root cause of tooth loss, though certain medical treatments can weaken an individual’s teeth as well. The most typical causes of tooth loss include:
- Genetic Disorders – Some congenital conditions can cause individuals to lose their teeth for seemingly no reason.
- Gum Disease– Periodontitis, when left untreated, can become quite serious, resulting in gum recession, brittleness in the teeth, and tooth loss.
- Tooth Decay – Tooth decay can weaken the teeth and cause them to either break or fall out at the root.
- Oral Injuries – Incurring injuries to the mouth can break teeth and cause them to fall out.
What Happens After Losing An Adult Tooth?
Missing teeth can lead to trouble chewing and swallowing food, which can result in digestive issues. Additionally, a single missing tooth can affect a person’s bite pattern, as a space in the mouth leads other teeth to migrate into the space.
When teeth migrate into an empty space, the strength and structure of the jawbone can deteriorate, which increases an individual’s risk of losing more teeth in the future.
