Sleep and Breathing for Children

At Signature Dentistry Centennial, our team is committed to helping children overcome sleeping and breathing conditions that negatively impact their development.

The gravity of a breathing issue is often unrecognized by parents and children, as many feel the condition simply affects the respiratory system. However, the body is a holistic system, and when one issue occurs, it can have significant impacts on other systems and processes.

It is our goal to help children develop healthy foundations that best enable them to live healthy, active lives. Dr. Khanjari and Dr. Bennett are of the first 150 dentists to be trained in using Vivos technology and as such, they apply that experience toward furthering the wellbeing of child patients.

Symptoms of a Compromised Airway/Breathing in Children?

Many of the symptoms of airway issues are easy to either ignore or attribute to other health conditions. Let’s cover some of the most common signs of compromised breathing in young people.

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Restless Sleep & Daytime Fatigue
  • Trouble Concentrating/Difficulty in School
  • Crowded/ Crooked Teeth
  • Aggressive Behavior/Irritability
  • Mouth Breathing
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Swollen Tonsils
  • Swollen Adenoids
  • Bed Wetting

What Causes A Compromised Airway/Breathing In Children?

Structural issues in the airway typically stem from poor development in the upper and lower jaws. Development can be impacted by bottle feeding, the use of pacifiers, and a diet consisting of soft food. Additionally, certain orthodontic procedures can alter the body’s natural growth pattern in young children.

These issues are so common in today’s world that many children suffer the effects of jaw malformation without even realizing it.

To provide children with an opportunity for true relief, Signature Dentistry Centennial utilizes the Vivos System to work with a child’s natural growth and guide it in the right direction for jaw and facial development. To learn more about the way Vivos can guide oral and airway development in children, watch the short video below.

What is Vivos?

The Vivos System is a revolutionary breakthrough in treating breathing disorders for both children and adults. It works by targeting the root cause of a breathing condition (usually a structural issue of the mouth or throat) and correcting it by reshaping the jaw and upper palate.

Vivos uses customized oral devices to promote appropriate growth throughout a child’s natural growth cycle. It’s non-surgical, non-invasive, drug-free, and it produces measurable, sustainable results.

Benefits of The Vivos System

Children typically experience the following benefits during and after their Vivos treatment protocol:

  • Better Sleep Quality
  • Better Breathing
  • Nasal Breathing (rather than mouth breathing)
  • More Upper Arch Space
  • Larger Airway
  • Greater Tongue Space
  • Straighter Teeth
  • Better Focus
  • Greater Concentration
  • Improved Facial Structure
  • Improved Facial Symmetry

How Does The Vivos System Work?

At your initial sleep consultation, our team will listen to any concerns you have, discover symptoms your child is experiencing, take a thorough medical history and complete examination to determine if your child is experiencing sleep or breathing problems related to a compromised airway. We will also let you know whether your child is a good candidate for The Vivos System.

At the diagnosis appointment, we take records that include photos, a 3D digital scan, and records of your child’s teeth. We will then review the findings and develop your child’s plan. Dr. Bennett and Dr. Khanjari have assembled a multidisciplinary healthcare team, that are available and ready to help your child should Dr. Bennett and Dr. Khanjari feel their care and expertise is needed. While all children’s Vivos treatment involves the use of progressive growth guides, your child’s needs are unique and their treatment plan and will be tailored to address your child’s particular needs.

This appointment is a celebration because it is the day your child will receive their first growth guide appliance! You and your child will be given special instructions regarding its wear based upon your treatment goals. In most cases, children wear their Vivos appliance when they sleep. If your child would benefit from working with one of the specialists on a multidisciplinary healthcare team, such as our myofunctional therapist or allergist, we will provide you with that referral at this time as well.

After a few follow up visits, generally 2-4 weeks apart, your child’s progress is checked every six months during their routine cleaning appointment. At these appointments, our doctors will tailor your Vivos appliance to fit the new expanded shape of your upper arch and airway. At this visit we will track and document the growth and changes your child is experiencing, congratulate them on their progress, and encourage them to continue. Treatment times vary as each child’s situation is unique, but generally we encourage the use of the growth guides into their early teens.
